This fantastically illustrated book from visionary artist Dmitry Sayenko (b. 1965 in Kiev) examines both the legends and the reality of recorded history regarding many great myths and figures spanning centures. Included are the Roman Emperor Nero, Cleopatra, Timur, the Piper of Hamelin, Don Juan, Galileo, Isaac Newton and his apple, George Washington and the cherry tree, Dracula, Elizabeth Bathory de Ecsed, the Flying Dutchman, Alexander Suvorov, Ostriches, Captain James Cook's arrow, and the mix up between ornithologist James Bond and Ian Fleming. Both the myths and the realities are surprising and scintillating, with vivid illustrations filling in the spaces left by the concise historical prose.
___ABOUT THE BOOK ARTIST: Dmitry Sayenko was the son of a book illustrator, and growing up under that influence he took up the craft himself. In 1993 he graduated from the Mukhina Art School, St. Petersburg, where he still lives and works today. For most of his work, he designs and crafts every aspect of the finished book: he makes the linocuts, sets the type, prints and binds the sheets, and often handmakes the paper. His works are in private collections as well as institutions around the world, including the Russian National Library, the Staatsbibliotheck, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Van Abbemuseum, and the Eoun-ho Kim Collection, among others. The illustrations are powerful and evocative, often incorporating other media such as pieces of old sheet music. The finished work is strong and powerful, with the exceedingly rough, heavy being deeply imprinted by the blocks so that the illustrations almost appear three-dimensional; the work has a force of its own which captures the mind and enchants the viewer.
