A three volume, pocket size set of the works of the Roman poet Ovid (b. 43 BCE), one of the three canonical poets of Latin literature (Virgil and Horace being the other two), with text in the original Latin. From the library of noted California lawyer and lecturer in the School of Jurisprudence, Arthur Gould Tashiera (1878-1938), and the library of James Falconer, the printer for Maunsel's, who printed James Joyce's controversial "Dubliners" in 1910. Printed at the Elzevir Press, a renowned family of Dutch printers of the 17th and 18th centuries, who printed a series of Latin classics between 1655 to 1666 and are best known for their duodecimo size volumes.___DESCRIPTION: Full dark green gilt-paneled morocco, backstrip with four raised bands, lettered and ruled in gilt, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, one engraved pictorial title, Elzevir printers device on all three title-pages, decorative initial; 32 mo size (4 5/8" by 2 5/8"), pagination: Volume I, [i-xii] [1-2] 3-268; Volume II, [1-8] 9-292; and Volume III [1-2] 3-309, the Daniel Elzevier edition.___CONDITION: A very good set, with a strong square text blocks, the leather bindings are smooth and supple, the gilt is bright, three attractive bookplates from prominent prior owners, very little foxing or age toning to interior; a few odd stains but overall quite bright, minor professional paper restoration to a few leaves, the engraved title is lacking in the lower left corner but has been professionally repaired, joints and corners slightly rubbed; overall a very good set with a unique provenance.___CITATION: "An Alphabetical Catalogue of All the Works Printed or Published By the Elzeviers...
