"Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" is a work of revisionist fiction by Gregory Maguire (b. 1954), retelling the story of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" from the perspective of Elpheba Thropp, who becomes The Wicked Witch of the West; the novel re-examines the characters of Baum's story, their relationships and ulterior motives, as well as political and social turmoil in the Land of Oz.
The novel is the first in The Wicked Years series, followed by "Son of a Witch" (published in September 2005), "A Lion Among Men" (published in October 2008), and "Out of Oz" (published in November 2011). In 2003, the novel became the basis for the Broadway musical "Wicked", starring Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth as Elphaba and Glinda the Good Witch, respectively; it is the sixth-longest running show on Broadway at the time of this writing.
We are offering "Wicked" with "Son of a Witch"; both volumes are the first editions, and both are signed by Maguire. Douglas Smith provides scratchboard illustrations for both novels, rendering the characters with dramatic line work and stark contrasts that match the depth and darkness of the story.
