William Marshall Smart (1889-1975) was a Scottish astronomer and the author of sixteen books on the subject of astronomy. Highly regarded, he taught, published, and was the winner of several awards including the Lorimer Medal of the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh, which was awarded to him in 1958.

This book is essentially mathematical in character, it includes the mathematical theory of a single star-drift, an explanation of solar motion, the theory of two star streams, Schwarzschild's ellipsoidal hypothesis relating to stellar motions, various methods of analyzing observational material, various methods of deriving mean parallaxes of groups of stars, an examination of the methods of investigating the space-distribution of the stars from a knowledge of their proper motions, theorems of stellar statistics, various investigations concerning open and globular clusters and the absorbing cloud, stellar systems in general, galactic rotation, and the dynamics of the Galaxy.

___CONDITION: A near fine copy, the binding is clean with only minimal rubbing to the edges, the corners are straight, the text block is strong and square with solid hinges, internally bright with the only mark being the signature in ink of a prior owner to the upper pastedown; the jacket is very good, with chipping only at the edges and not obscuring the text, some wear to the head of the spine, toned at the backstrip; not commonly found with this volume; overall a wonderful example.
