This collection of the works of Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) is illustrated with lithographs by Lynd Ward (1905-1985), an artist best known for his "wordless novels", elaborately illustrated books often viewed as a precursor to the graphic novel.
___DESCRIPTION: Half blue cloth with marbled paper boards, gilt ruled border and lettering on the spine, frontispiece a two-colour lithograph of Thomas Jefferson by Lynd Ward, title page in blue and black, full-page two-colour lithographs by Ward throughout, illustrations and headpieces in blue by Ward throughout; monotype Bell, grey-toned Curtis wove paper, quarto size (10.75" by 7.25"), pagination: [i-iv] v-x [xi-xii] [1-2] 3-362  [1 colophon], one of 1500 copies, this number 351, signed by Lynd Ward on the colophon. With announcement, one sheet, and LEC Monthly Newsletter, one sheet folded once to make four pages, with a horizontal crease for mailing, laid in. In a glassine wrapper, housed in a slicpase covered in marbled paper, with cream paper spine label with blue ruled borders and lettering.
___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The announcement and LEC Newsletter are fine, clean and without wear. The glassine wrapper is near fine, clean, with light edge wear, a shallow crease to the rear panel, and a three-inch tear along the rear edge of the spine. The slipcase is near fine, strong and sturdy, clean, with some wear to the corners.
