The Proverbs have been a source of comfort and guidance to both Jews and Christians for millenia. This a lovely publication with decorations and illustrations by Valenti Angelo (1897-1982); born in Italy, he moved to San Francisco when he was nineteen years old, and ten years later he began cutting and printing book plates. He worked for many years for the Grabhorn Press, expanding in later years to many other publishers; during his career he illustrated approximately 250 books.
Valenti Angelo designed, decorated, and hand-set the type for this book; he fashioned eight sets of borders, thirty-one initial letters, six tailpieces, one title-page, and one colophon, more than any other artist for the Limited Editions Club (N. B., info from Monthly Letter). The introduction to this volume was written by Dr. Robert Gordis, a professor of Bible at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York and a member of the National Advirosy Committee on Freedom and Religious Affairs of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, as well as many others.
