New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1971. Fraser, Eric. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Number 351 of 1500, octavo size, 117 p., signed by Eric Fraser. Fine / near fine. Item #171031199
This treatise on love was written by Ovid in 2 CE, and teaches basic male and female relationship skills and techniques.
The first two books, aimed at men, contain sections which cover such topics as 'not forgetting her birthday', 'letting her miss you - but not for long' and 'not asking about her age'. The third gives similar advice to women, sample themes include: 'making up, but in private', 'being wary of false lovers' and 'trying young and older lovers'. The work employs cryptic allusions and treats the subject matter with the range and intelligence of urbane conversation, with the superficial brilliance of the poetry dazzling.
The standard situations and clichés of the subject are treated in a highly entertaining way, spiced with colourful details from Greek mythology, everyday Roman life and general human experience (n.b., from the website of Ancient Literature).
