Joseph Conrad (born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, 1857-1924) was a Polish-British writer who, despite not being fluent in English until his twenties, is regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. He wrote stories and novels that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of an impassive, inscrutible universe and often brought a non-English sensibility into English literature.
This story is somewhat akin to "Lord Jim" and "Nostromo", as the protagonist faces a difficult moral decision and chooses what, to many, appears to be the "wrong" decision. The plot is based on a real incident which occurred in 1880, on the British clipper ship the "Cutty Sark".
