Roughing It In California

Kentfield - California: The L-D Allen Press, 1953. Limited Edition. Hardcover. One of 200 copies, quarto size, 90 pp. Very good. Item #17100596

A personal narrative of several years the author spent "vagabondizing" in the "Far West." Per the printer's notes, included in this book are all the chapters of "Roughing It" that relate to California. A finely printed edition of this amusing work by Mark Twain, imaginatively bound with wood veneer over boards and a spine covered with Italian paper which had an unfortunate propensity to fade "alarmingly", which the Allens only discovered later, "to our dismay".

Harold Mallette Dean (1907-1975) was a painter and illustrator who worked for most of his career in San Francisco, on projects such as the WPA Mural Project, the murals in Coit Tower, and for fifteen years illustrating books for the Grabhorn Press. He and his wife Vivien also established their own printing press in Fairfax, California, in 1953, with Mallette doing the illustrations for most of the books they issued.
