Valenti Angelo (1897-1982), a highly regarded designer, illuminator, and decorator of books, had a career that spanned decades, doing much of his early work for the Grabhorn Press and the Book Club of California; he also printed his own books in extremely limited editions under the imprints of "The Golden Cross Press" and "The Press of Valenti Angelo".
This woodcut appears to be a signed proof plate from Angelo's "A Battle in Washington Square", of which 200 copies were printed in 1942; Angelo wrote and illustrated this work, including this woodcut, which was printed on the title page of the book. This is a single sheet with the woodcut from the book, but without any printing, signed by Angelo in blue ink below the image.
