Saint Petersburg: [Dmitry Sayenko], 2015-2016. Sayenko, Dmitry. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Number 9 of 18 copies, folio, 40 pp., signed by Dmitry Sayenko. Fine. Item #17072604

Mary Bartlett, bookbinding tutor at Dartington Hall (which is credited on the title page), has a passion for unicorns. Her short story text is here matched with the stirring illustrations of Dmitry Sayenko to create a book every bit as magical as the mythical beast itself. Dmitry Sayenko (b. 1965 in Kiev) learned a love of book illustration from his father, a book illustrator himself, by watching him at work. In 1995 Dmitry graduated from the Mukhina Art School, St. Petersburg, where he still lives and works and in 1993 he began to work in the artist book field while he continues to teach. For most of his books, Dmitry not only designs the book, but makes the cuts, prints and binds the books, and for several also makes the paper. His works are in private collections as well as institutions around the world, including the Russian National Library, the Staatsbibliotheck, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Van Abbemuseum, and the Eoun-ho Kim Collection, among others. Dmitry's illustrations are powerful and evocative, and in addition to wood and linocuts he uses other media such as pieces of old sheet music in creating his books. This volume, in which Ms. Bartlett's "Histories" of the Unicorn is printed for the first time, is in our opinion Mr. Sayenko's tour-de-force and must be seen to be appreciated. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in full patterned fabric reminscent of a medieval stained glass window, silver-coloured corner-pieces, front inset of brown paper with linocut in black of a unicorn with the title stamped in gold beneath, top and fore-edges uncut, bottom edge rough-cut, aubergine endpapers, pictorial title page in brown and black, linocuts on almost every page in black and grey interspersed with text, colophon page in red; types XX Century Cond, Baskerville and Bodoni, paper handmade by the artist with his watermark of Queen Swan, folio size (13.25" by 9.75"), unpaginated, 40 pages (plus two foldout pages) with English text and linocut images printed on both sides, limited edition of 18 copies, each numbered and signed by the artist, this no. 9.
