Oxford: The University Press, 1866. Leather bound. Sixmo size, with working clasp. Near fine. Item #17070204

A lovely, leather-bound 1866 copy of the English Book of Common Prayer, with a working clasp engraved "M.L. / to S.G. (?) M.L. / Easter / 1869" in an elegant script.

___DESCRIPTION: Full brown leather, both boards with embossed rules inlaid with black, the front board with a brass cross mounted in the middle, spine with the title "Common Prayer" in gilt and with raised bands surrounded with black embossed rules, single brass clasp which is fully functional inscribed as set forth above, edges gilt over red, marbled endpapers, title page in red and black with the entire page enclosed within a red ruled border (as is every page in the book), many decorative initial capitals throughout in red, some red lettering throughout, two original red ribbon markers; sixmo size (6.25" by 4.25"), unpaginated, includes all of the standard pre-1928 BCP forms of worship, ending with "A Table of the [Thirty-Nine] Articles" and "A Table of Kindred and Affinity".

___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, straight corners with minimal rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, the clasp bright and the engraving unrubbed, fully functional; some light rubbing at the head and tail of the spine at the joints, the leather binding with the stray rubbed spot, aa single leaf (part-way through "The Communion") with some closed tears at the gutter margin, both ribbon markers attached but one shorter than the other, some scattered very light prior owner notations in pencil throughout (mostly marking the dates of certain feast days for the years in the early 1870s), and a few very old, small plant leaves laid in which have created some offsetting. Overall a lovely example of a very gently used, and much-loved, Book of Common Prayer from 150 years ago.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
