The quintessential writings, and authoritative texts on Samuel Johnson, LL.D. (1709-1784), whom the OED describes as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history", with two book plates, one being from the library of Alf Martin, possibly that of the famous Swedish journalist. Boswell's "Life of Johnson" is such a classic of literature that we feel it almost needs no introduction, although we find it propitious that the two gentlemen met in the book shop of Tom Davies, a friend of Johnson's. James Boswell, 9th Laird of Auchinleck (1740-1795) kept a series of journals that, by the time he wrote "Life of Johnson" filled eighteen volumes; while ostensibly a biography it is also an important source of insights into the time period in which Johnson lived.
