The Book of Tobit, from the Apocrypha, According to the Authorised Version

[Harrow Weald, Middlesex]: The Raven Press, Printed by Robert Ashwin Maynard and Horace Walter Bray, 1931. Bray, Horace Walter. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 20 of 275, octavo size, 35 pp. Near fine. Item #17041011

The Book of Tobit is part of the Apocrypha, generally included in Catholic and Orthodox biblical canons, but not those of Protestantism and Judaism; it tells the story of Tobit and his life in Ninevah, with his son and wife, and the miracles that occur through the work of the archangel Raphael.

This lovely volume is the first book produced by Horace Walter Bray and Robert Ashwin Maynard (1888-1966) after they left the Gregynog Press in Wales to start the Raven Press, which produced many fine press publications during its admittedly short existance. Bray also provides wood engravings for this edition, visualising the characters in an elegantly simple style; the illlustrations are hand-coloured to give each scene depth and resonance.

___DESCRIPTION: Quarter vellum with marbled paper boards, gilt raven illustration on the front cover, gilt lettering on the spine, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, decorative hand-coloured initial capitals and head- and tailpieces throughout, five full-page hand-coloured wood engravings by Horace Walter Bray; octavo size (9" by 6.25"), pagination: [1-4] 5-34 [1 colophon], one of 275 copies, this number 20. The book came to us in Mylar, which may or may not be from the publisher.

___CONDITION: Volume is almost fine; the covers clean, the corners straight, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; some slight rubbing to the corners and the bottom edges of the boards and the front board ever so slightly bowed (likely from the vellum shelfback), else fine.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
