This four-volume set is a thorough history of the Civil War, taken from accounts of people who fought in both the Confederate and Union armies; at once personal and informative, the books include writings by people such as Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) and Lew Wallace (1827-1905), a Union general best known for writing "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ".

The volumes are replete with maps and engravings by numerous artists, including E. W. Kemble (1861-1933), best known for illustrating the first edition of Mark Twain's "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", and Joseph Pennell (1857-1926), who taught at the Slade School of Art in London and created a considerable number of works depicting architectural and municipal subjects.

___DESCRIPTION: Full brown sheepskin, the spine with four raised bands and gilt rules, red and black leather spine labels with gilt lettering, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers, each volume with an engraved frontispiece, title page with floral decorations in black, all volumes filled with illustrations and maps by various artists; quarto size (11.25" by 8"), pagination: Volume I: [i-viii] ix-xxiii [xxiv] [1] 2-750; Volume II: [i-viii] ix-xx [1] 2-760; Volume III: [i-viii] ix-xx [1] 2-752; Volume IV: [i-viii] ix-xx [1] 2-829.

___CONDITION: Set is very good, with clean boards, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors are clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; all volumes with rubbing to the heads and tails of the spines, edges of the boards, and corners, creasing to the first flyleaf in Volume I, Volume I with rear joint cracked, Volume IV with front joint cracked, and the front joint of Volume III is just starting to crack, but all volumes have solid hinges, and Volume IV front board is slightly bowed.
