London: John Lane the Bodley Head Ltd., 1925. Beardsley, Aubrey. First Edition. Hardcover. First printing, quarto size, 193 pp. Near fine. Item #17022804
Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898), a well-known and beloved illustrator during the Aesthetic movement, created work in black ink with a strong Japanese woodblock influence, and his illustrations are known for their sense of the grotesque, decadent, and the erotic; this volume contains many of his uncollected and unpublished works, including numerous juvenalia and sketches. Some finished pieces in this collection are several illustrations of Edgar Allan Poe's stories, such as "The Black Cat", and illustrations from "Le Morte d'Arthur", Beardsley's first commission in 1893. The illustrations offer a unique look at the young artist, demonstrating the development of Beardsley's style and his move into book illustration.
