An early 19th century edition (with introduction and all title pages dated 1826) of Milton's works in a grand contemporary binding by Riviere & Son; without textual annotations, Thomas White printer's colophon at end of volume I dated 1825, "The Life of John Milton" is written by Milton's pupil and nephew Edward Philips. From the library of Coles Hegeman with the bookplate. ***DESCRIPTION: Full contemporary burgundy black- and gilt-paneled crushed morocco with gilt flourishes at each corner, black-stamped arabesque medallion to both boards and framed in gilt, five raised bands with gilt flourishes, rules and lettering in each panel, gilt rules to the turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top-edge gilt, frontis portrait of the author to volume I, fine laid paper with chain lines, duodecimo size (approximately 7.5" by 4.75"), pagination: Volume I, [i-v] vi-xlviii [1-3] 4-333; Volume II, [i-ii] [1-3] 4-341; and Volume III, [i-ii] [1-3] 4-292; Riviere and Son binder's stamp to each volume in gilt, Coles Hegeman bookplate on first flyleaf of each volume. ***CONDITION: All three volumes are in overall near fine condition, the leather binding smooth and supple, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with minimal/no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright except for the occasional faint hint of foxing, and free of prior owner markings; this copy has been professionally re-jointed; near fine. ***POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
