[San Francisco]: Privately Printed by Cecil and James Johnson, The Windsor Press, 1930. Adams, Ansel. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 57 of 60, quarto size, 27 pp., frontispiece signed by Ansel Adams. Near Fine. Item #16120703
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) is best known for his works of fiction such as "Treasure Island", "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde", and "Kidnapped"; he travelled extensively, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, and wrote about his experiences. In 1897, three years after his death, a memorial was created in Portsmouth Square in San Francisco, and "The Enchanted Galleon" tells of the monument as well as Stevenson's exploits in the Bay Area.
As related in the colophon, the book was privately printed for Garfield D. Merner "and is dedicated by him to Flodden W. Heron in appreciation of a Stevenson Night given by Mr. Heron before the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco, March 10, 1930".
It was privately printed by The Windsor Press, the imprint of Cecil and James Johnson, who came to San Francisco in 1924 and set up The Windsor Press; "while fine printing was secondary to commercial work, they managed to turn out an astonishing number of charming books and broadsides during the 19 years the Press existed" (Magee 21). Included also is a photograph by Ansel Adams (1902-1984) of the Stevenson memorial, signed by Adams below the photograph.
