Edward Gorey (1925-2000) is probably best known for his poisonously funny picture books which are complex, humorous, serious, and provocative. His vast body of work includes over one hundred books written by himself as well as illustrated works of the well-known authors including T. S. Eliot, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll, H. G. Wells, and Virginia Woolf (n. b., info from the Edward Gorey House website). "The Broken Spoke" is a collection of illustrations in the style of postcards of wry and humorous scenes relating to bicycles and cycling, showcasing Gorey's superior skills in illustration and comedy.

___DESCRIPTION: Full pictorial paper boards with a full-colour wrap-around illustration by Gorey, title in grey lettering in a white rectangle on the front cover and spine, endpapers have black-and-white "postcard" illustrations with the words "Cycling Cards from the pen of Oogear Wryde" (a pseudonym and anagram of Edward Gorey), full-colour and black-and-white illustrations by Gorey throughout; duodecimo size (7.5" by 5.25", oblong), pagination: 64 unnumbered pages. In a paper dust jacket with the same illustration as on the front and back covers.

___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, straight corners, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some rubbing to the top and bottom corners and the head and tail of the spine, and some foxing to the top edge of the text block, else fine. The dust jacket is also near fine; clean with bright colours, some light rubbing to the corners and spine, the spine with some slight sunning, and the top edge of the inside flaps have some age-toning.
