[San Francisco]: [The Grabhorn Press], 1949. Limited Edition. Hardcover. One of 500 copies, folio size, 64 pp. Fine. Item #16072513

We cannot introduce this book better than to set forth the opening paragraph of the Note: "On March 20, 1949, members of the Vice Squad of the Philadelphia Police Department, at the direction of Inspector Craig Ellis, head of the Vice Squad, commenced a series of mass raids upon book stores and booksellers in Philadelphia. Inspector Ellis gave his men a list of books that in his opinion were obscene, and directed them to seize the books wherever found. Fifty-four booksellers were raided, and nearly twelve hundred copies of the books were confiscated". Judge Bok's decision on this censorship case was highly thought of by publisher Alfred Knopf and his wife Blanche, who commissioned the Grabhorn brothers to print 500 copies to distribute as a Christmas keepsake in 1949 "to give it this permanent and beautiful dress" (n. b., info from Note). Printed by the Grabhorn Press, run by brothers Edwin and Robert Grabhorn, one of the most highly renowned private presses in America during the twentieth century.
