William H. Ashley (ca. 1778-1838) was a prominent player in the fur trade in the western United States, forming the company Rocky Mountain Fur Incorporated with the miner and frontiersman Andrew Henry (ca. 1775-1832); the company was famous for the men who worked for it from 1822 to 1832, known as "Ashley's Hundred".

This deluxe edition, by American historian Dale L. Morgan (1914-1971), presents a biography of Ashley as well as an account of his influence in the fur trade and exploration in the Rocky Mountains, filled with illustrations and a fold-out map at the back of the book, showing the places Ashley travelled in his expansion of his business.

___DESCRIPTION: Half brown calf with brown cloth boards, the spine with three raised bands and red leather label with gilt lettering and rules, fore-edge rough cut, frontispiece a painting by Charles Bodmer, captioned "Mehskéhmé-Sukahs or Iron Shirt, Piegan Chief of the Ashley Era", title page in red and black with line drawing in black, black-and-white illustrations by various artists throughout, with one watercolour by Bodmer in colour, fold-out black-and-white map at the back of the book titled "The West of William H. Ashley 1822-1838"; folio size (13.75" by 10"), pagination: [i-x] xi-liv [lv-lvi] 1-341, one of 250 copies of the deluxe edition, this copy out of series and unnumbered, signed by Dale L. Morgan on the limitation page at the front of the book.

___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; very light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and to the corners, and corners are gently bumped, with a few light marks to the leather. Lacking the slipcase.
