Boston: Bibliophile Society, 1901, 1904. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Ten volumes, complete, no. 63 of 467, octavo size, 1956 total pp., engraved frontispieces signed by the artist in pencil. Near fine. Item #16051217
The Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65 BCE - 8 BCE), known as Horace in the English-speaking world, penned a prolific amount of verses, often employing iambic metre; this ten-volume set comprises his odes and epodes, with a thorough examination of the text and a bibliography. "A Thousand Horatian Quotations" contains quotes about Horace, categorised as "appreciations", by ancient writers, as well as pithy statements by Horace himself.
The title pages are graced with decorative borders by American illustrator Howard Pyle (1853-1911), who illustrated numerous books for young people and started his own school of art, The Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art; Pyle also illustrates the frontispieces in a few of the volumes in this set, which he signed in pencil. A beautifully printed set, with many illustrations scattered throughout the set, "Odes and Epodes" is an exceptional way to engage with the work of Horace, with the beauty of lyrical poetry and the academic examinations of the text.
