The Psychology of Printing Types

Seattle: Printed by Frank McCaffrey at his Dogwood Press [which is in Seattle] for the pleasure of the doing & as a Keepsake for the friends of Henry Lewis Bullen [1934], 1934. Hardcover. Folio size, 19 pp., inscribed by the printer. Very Good Plus. Item #16050305

Henry Lewis Bullen (1857-1938) was a major figure in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century printing and typefounding, and one of the most important and most prolific writers of the period; his work continues to be relevant to this day, and it was therefore fitting that Frank McCaffrey chose this article, originally published in 1912, as the first book to be published by his Dogwood Press. A humorous side-note is contained in the inscription by him: "To Paul from Frank / - yes I forgot to print the 'year' on the title page! / Seattle 7-26-34" - and, indeed, there is no year of publication on the title page.

___DESCRIPTION: Quarter black leather with decorative paper boards of light blue with an ivory design, rust-coloured leather spine label with gilt lettering, fore- and bottom edges uncut, volume opens with "A Personal Note" from Frank McCaffrey on why he chose this essay as the maiden volume from his Press, the inscription regarding the missing year referred to above written at the bottom of this page in blue ink, large woodcut of the logo of the Dogwood Press on the title page, nine-line initial capital letter in turquoise outlined in gold; quarto size (just under 11.5" tall), pagination: (i-vi), (1)-13.

___CONDITION: The volume is almost near fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with only minor rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and other than the inscription referred to above it is entirely free of prior owner markings; we are grading as very good plus due to some slight wear to the leather spine and a small scrape to the paper on the front board near the bottom edge.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details.
