Beverly Cleary (born Beverly Atlee Bunn, 1916-2021) is remembered by generations of children for her wonderful stories with characters with whom children could identify, including Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Ralph S. Mouse. She was the winner of numerous awards including the National Book Award (1981) for "Ramona and Her Mother" and the Newbury Medal (1984) for "Dear Mr. Henshaw", among many others.

Cleary was a librarian herself, having graduated with a Master's Degree in Library Science (1939) from the University of Washington, and worked as a librarian until she turned her attention to writing full-time in 1942. So it comes as no surprise that this book was inscribed to a librarian thus: "To [name], a good (underlined) librarian - Happy reading! Beverly Cleary".
