Woodbridge, UK: Boydell Press, 1985. Beardsley, Aubrey. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Two volumes (complete), number 307 of 500, quarto size, 1120 pp. Fine. Item #16032502
This collection by Sir Thomas Malory is a reworking of the legendary tales of King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin, and the Knights of the Round Table: Malory interprets existing French and English tales and adds original material to these popular stories.
Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898), a well-known and beloved illustrator during the Aesthetic movement, created work in black ink with a strong Japanese woodblock influence, and his illustrations are known for their sense of the grotesque, decadent, and the erotic; his work for "Le Morte d'Arthur" was his first commission. A contemporary of Oscar Wilde and James A. McNeil Whistler, he contributed greatly to the Art Nouveau movement until his death at an early age from tuberculosis.
This two-volume set is a reprint in facsimile of the small paper issue of the first edition, with a new introduction.
