The second edition of The Book of Ruth printed by the Grabhorns, the first being in a larger format and printed the year previous, and which was one of the Fifty Books of the Year for 1926. The type was not reset for this subsequent edition, and the double columns of the first Book of Ruth were simply used in a single column (n. b., from Heller and Magee).
___DESCRIPTION: Quarter tan cloth with marbled paper boards in shades of tan, orange and some blue, title in gold on spine, plain endpapers, title and colophon printed in red, coloured headpiece, first word of the text and forty-five coloured initials (in red, blue, green, purple, and turquoise) designed and illuminated by Valenti Angelo; hand-set Gothique Ancienne type, Van Gelder paper, thirty-twomo size (4.5" by 3.25"), 42 unnumbered pages, one of 250 copies, this number 89. Prior owner bookplate on the front paste-down endpaper of Walter and Anita Newman (the son of the founder of Newman, California). In a slipcase covered in brown paper.
___CONDITION: Volume is fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block, solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and other than the bookplate referred to above it is entirely free of prior owner markings; the cloth spine has a bit of sunning and a few pages somewhat roughly opened, else fine. The slipcase is near fine with a small chip of the paper covering from the spine and a bit of tenderness where the spine strip meets the rest of the case.
