France of To-Morrow

[Stanford, California, Printed in San Francisco]: James Ladd Delkin, Stanford University [Printed by the Grabhorn Press], 1941. Limited Edition. Hardcover. One of 250 copies, quarto size, [73] pp. Near Fine. Item #16011208

An essay by Albert Leon Guerard (1880-1959) on Vichy France, the nominal government of German-occupied France during WWII. He begins: "The France of to-morrow! What do we know of the France of to-day? Instead of clarion calls, there come to us across the ocean only vague rumors, whispers about the impotence of bewildered and disheartened men". He argues against the Vichy regime, and posits how victory over them might be won: "The Victory must be a Victory of Reason, Won in the German Soul" he wrote - in hindsight, alas, it was not to be won through reason. The essay provides a fascinating glimpse into the time when Nazi Germany was still a world power and reasonable men at times disagreed on the best way to victory. Published by James Ladd Delkin of Stanford University, where Albert Guerard was a Professor for many years, and printed by the inimitable Grabhorn Press.
