Philadelphia: America: Printed for Subscribers, by Robert Bell, next Door to St. Paul's Church, Third Street, 1775. 1st Edition. Leather. Octavo size, 520 pp. Good. Item #15083224
First U.S. Edition of this work previously published in Great Britain. William Cullen (1710-1790) was one of the most important figures in the medical world of the late 18th-century, being a professor at the Edinburgh Medical School which was a leading center of medical education at the time; his students included Joseph Black, Benjamin Rush, John Morgan (founder of the Medical School at the College of Philadelphia, the first medical school in America), William Withering, Sir Gilbert Blane, and John Coakley Lettsom.
___DESCRIPTION: Contemporary binding of dark brown leather (now professionally restored, see condition statement below), plain endpapers, Index at the rear; octavo size (approximately 9.5" tall), pagination: (i)-viii, (1)-512.
___CONDITION: We have had professional restoration work done on the binding, the restorer laid the original leather over new boards and the binding is now strong and secure; one can still see the contemporary marks written on the old leather, including some partial names. He was also able to lay down the original endpapers so those are present with their multitude of vintage prior owner names and markings, including one on the rear pastedown which reads "Command you may / But I can say / Liberty is given to me". We are grading the book as good only as the text pages are heavily worn and soiled, including an old dampstain; the title page is present but soiled and stained, with a large chip missing on the lower left corner (no loss to text, there is a wide margin at the bottom of the page); the remainder of the text pages share the soiling and staining with the occasional small tear in the margins, but the book has been collated and all pages are present, with the text easily legible.
___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details.
