The Philadelphia Practice of Midwifery

Philadelphia: James Kay, Jun. & Brother, 1842. Second Edition. Leather. Octavo size, 484 pp. Very Good. Item #15083221

The field of medicine saw many discoveries and changes in attitudes and practises during the nineteenth century; Charles Delucena Meigs (1792-1869) was a renowned doctor who specialised in obstetrics and, at the time, was considered the leader of his field. "The Philadelphia Practice of Midwifery" denotes his medicinal knowledges and illuminates the anatomy and practises in the field of obstetrics at the time it was written.

Some of his ideas are outdated now, such as his opposition to using obstetric anaesthesia and his refusal to believe that illnesses, particular post-parnum diseases, could be spread by doctors themselves, with the infamous quote "Doctors are gentlemen and a gentleman's hands are clean" being attributed to him.

This volume is the second edition; the first edition was published in 1838, four years prior, and this second edition includes corrections to the first as well as additional material.

___DESCRIPTION: Full brown leather, four raised bands on the spine with gilt along the edges, black leather spine label with gilt lettering and ruled borders, gilt decorations along the edges of the boards, one black-and-white lithograph opposite page 107, thirty-six black-and-white engravings at the rear of the book; octavo size (9" by 6"), pagination: [1-7] 8-11 [12-13] 14-408 [409-484].

___CONDITION: Volume is very good overall, with a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the illustrations are collated complete, the only prior owner markings we see are a name written in a vintage hand on the front pastedown, and on the title page a faint stamped name surrounded by a decorative border at the top margin; there is some soiling to the boards, rubbing to the edges and corners, corners are very gently bumped, foxing throughout the interior pages, and the gutter is cracked between figures 32 and 33. Even with these faults, it is a sturdy, very good example of the practice of midwifery in the mid-19th century.

___POSTAGE:  International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
