Polly's Lion; A California Story for Children

San Francisco: Carnahan Publishing, 1902. Second Edition. Hardcover. Octavo size, 174 pp. Good. Item #15031701

Second edition (stated) of "probably the first novel set in the Fresno area." Likely the first story set in Fresno, although with much of the action being set in Yosemite where the family goes on several trips. The engravings include a depiction of a carriage traveling through a hollowed-out sequoia, California poppies, and the "Sylvan Lodge" (The Wawona Hotel). With much of the dialogue, both that of the two children and two incidental characters, an African-American man and a Chinese man, all taking place in dialect - a style of writing that was popular about a hundred years ago and is now viewed with disfavour. Self-published, and although it went to at least two editions, one can only assume it was not highly popular given its relative scarcity today.
