Limited edition of 483 copies printed for members of the Bibliophile Society, plus a "limited number" printed for the editor. An illuminating correspondence between a young Charles Dickens and his friend, William Henry Kolle, who conducted notes back and forth between Dickens and his love, the sister of Kolle's love interest and whom he subsequently married.
Contains two illustrations of Dickens, one being the frontispiece, an etching by W.H.W. Bickenell from the study (in oil) by W.R. Frith, and the second a facsimile of a pencil sketch of Dickens; a facsimile reproduction of a single-page poem of 8 lines "To Ariel", signed by Dickens, dated October of 1838, with a cartoon character drawn at the bottom of the page, and several other facsimile letters.
___DESCRIPTION: Half ivory parchment with brown paper boards, gilt lettering on the spine, top edge rough-cut, other edges uncut, plain endpapers, seal of the Bibliophile Society in red, followed by the limitation statement within an etching of the Bibliophile Society's plate, followed by facsimile of poem referred to above, followed by tissue-guarded frontispiece and title page. Octavo size, pagination: (i-iv), v-xii, 1-90. Volume was issued with two slipcases, the inner of ivory paper with a brown spine, the outer of all brown paper with a paper spine label showing the title in black and the seal of the Bibliophile Society in red.
___CONDITION: Volume is overall in fine condition, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners without rubbing, and the interior is clean and bright; we are grading as near fine only due to a prior owner (tasteful) bookplate on the front pastedown, scattered foxing, and one very small smudge on the verso of the front free endpaper. Inner slipcase is near fine, some minor scattered foxing in the ivory paper and one shallow scrape on one bottom edge (so the brown paper shows through the white), outer slipcase is very good, there is general minor wear, the box shows a small split at the top of the spine where it meets the top of the box, and the spine label has darkened with age.
___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details.
