With the First Transcontinental Railroad having been completed just a year prior, the West was now open and many traveled the route, bringing back tales to the general public of the wonders of the largely hitherto unexplored part of the United States.
___DESCRIPTION: Brown cloth binding with gilt lettering on the front with a small vignette of a setting sun, gilt lettering on the spine with a small pictorial lion against a setting sun, blind-embossing on both boards, brown coated endpapers, pictorial title page of a "View of the Pacific Railroad", with five other woodcut illustrations throughout. Small Octavo size, (i-iii), iv-xii, (13), 14-444.
___CONDITION: Overall in very good condition, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, and entirely free of prior owner markings; there is some overall soiling to the binding, rubbing to the corners, head and tail of the spine, a bit of the brown coating has rubbed off to the bottom corner of the front free endpaper, and some old dampstaining to the preliminaries, not affecting any text.
