Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book

New York: Random House [1962]. First Edition. Hardcover. First printing, quarto size, 56 pp. Near Fine / Very Good. Item #14081001

Dr. Seuss, pen name for Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991) was an acclaimed writer known mostly for his children's books. His honors include two Academy awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody award, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal, and the Pulitzer Prize, which was awarded to him in 1984 as a Special Citation "for his special contribution over nearly half a century to the education and enjoyment of America's children and their parents."

This book begins with a small bug, named Van Vleck, yawning. This yawn spreads (as yawns are terribly contagious) and then the book follows various creatures throughout the lands who are sleeping, or preparing to sleep - a perfect book for bedtime stories, especially with the warning on both endpapers "This Book is to be Read in Bed".

___DESCRIPTION: Glossy pictorial front board, pictorial endpapers, unpaginated with a total of 28 leaves; first edition, first printing with correct price and ads on back of DJ. The dust jacket mirrors the book on the front, has ads for other titles on the back, book summary on front flap, author bio and photo on the back flap.

___CONDITION: Overall fine, with a strong text block, solid hinges, the boards are clean with bright colors; internally clean and bright, with the only markings being a gift inscription "Happy 8th Birthday / Ronald from Mother /June 10, 1965" on the verso of the front free endpaper - we are grading as near fine due to some very minor wear to the bottom of the boards and tail of the spine, and a very gentle bump to the head of the spine. The unclipped dust jacket is also in very good condition, it does have some overall edgewear most noticeably at the head and tail of the spine and a crease on the front flap about a half-inch from the edge; the colors are all bright and clear with little to no sunning, even on the spine.

___CITATION: Younger & Hirsch 20, price on DJ flap is 295/295, ads on back of DJ run through "Mulberry Street" in the top box and "Green Eggs and Ham" in the bottom ("For Beginning Readers") box.
