The Perfumed Garden, For the Soul's Delectation, The First of Three Volumes

Paris and Benares: The Kamashastra Society, 1907. Hardcover. Octavo size, 300 pp. Very Good. Item #14013006

A collection of sexual/erotic essays and tales in the style of the Arabian Nights. This volume appears to be one of the pirated versions referred to in the Burton bibliography by Penzer (see more below). The book's Foreword opens: "The 'Perfumed Garden' is a panegyric of love; a song of sensual delights; a collection of joyous imaginings; a work of curious knowledge; a contribution to ethnological science; useful alike to the student of languages, of orientalism and of anthropology".

___DESCRIPTION: Grey silk cloth boards with Arabic characters in gilt on the front and rear boards formed in the shape of a triangle, gilt lettering on the spine, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, plain endpapers of laid paper, title page, several chapter headings and some initial capital letters in red and black Pagination: (i-viii), (1), 2-281, printer's statement on final page ("Alencon - Imprimerie Veuve Felix Guy et Cie").

___CONDITION: Overall very good+, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, some darkening to the endpapers but the text block has only minimal toning, the only prior owner markings being a bookplate on the front pastedown; the corners are mildly bumped/rubbed, as are the head and tail of the spine, and there is some slight rubbing/soiling to the lower left corner of the front board.

___CITATION: Penzer, pg. 175 - "There are various other pirated editions of the "Garden" which occasionally turn up in the market. There is one bound in grey silk cloth, published by a firm in Paris and bearing the name of the Society. This is one of three volumes, the second and third of which have not yet appeared, and it looks as if they never will appear. The edition has absolutely no right to use the name of Burton's Society, and it is one which on inspection collectors and students will leave alone".
