American author Carl Sandburg (1878-1967) won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1940 for this four-volume biography on one of the United State's most influential presidents; these books deal predominately with Abraham Lincoln's presidency and the American Civil War.

Sandburg, best known for his poetry about the city of Chicago, Illinois, published a total of six volumes about Lincoln's life, including the two-volume set, "The Prairie Years", which preceded "The War Years"; at the time, Sandburg was often credited with being one of the primary sources of biographical information on Lincoln for most Americans.

This the first trade edition, published after the deluxe limited edition of 525 copies.
