n.p. Chicago Tribune, 1947. Gustavson, Lealand Roger. Poster. Signed by Gustavson. Very Good. Item #13101001
Lealand Roger Gustavson (1899-1966) was a prolific illustrator, contributing to a myriad of publications, such as "The Chicago Tribune" and "Liberty Magazine"; pulp magazines such as "Blue Book" and "Triple-X Western"; and "The Saturday Evening Post" (n. b., per Pulp Artists website).
This proof drawing is for the book "Circle C Carries On" by Brett Rider, with a caption from the text written in pencil below the image, and signed by Gustavson in ink at the bottom right corner of the illustration. The drawing shows Gustavson's loose and confident style, and is an excellent example of one of his many illustrations of western fiction.
It also provides a glimpse into the production of illustrated books in the re-digital age, as one can clearly see where "white-out" was used to adjust some of the dark lines, and with a red rubber-stamped block in the lower left margin: "Return this drawing with proofs attached to Art Dept. Wanted ________" with "Mon. 10 am" written in pencil on the line, along with a few other notations surrounding the image denoting size and placement within the book.
