San Francisco: The Book Club of California [printed by the L-D Allen Press], 1945. Limited Edition. Hardcover. One of 250 copies, quarto size, 92 pp. Very Good. Item #121110123

"Heraldry of New Helvetia" is a compendium of California cattle brands and a look at the cattlemen themselves who had a pivotal role in the events of the 1840s that led to the acquisition of California by the United States. Included are thirty-two facsimiles of California cattle brand registrations, and each image is accompanied by a printed version of the text and biographical notes about the owner, with historical information relating to the development of California and personal anecdotes both poignant and humorous.

The Allen Press, begun by Lewis and Dorothy Allen in the San Francisco Bay Area to create stunning handprinted fine press books, printed several books for the Book Club of California, of which this is the first; this book is also the first of theirs to be selected as one of the "Fifty Books of the Year" by the American Institute of Graphic Arts.
