[Oakland, California]: The Eucalyptus Press, Mills College, 1937. Uhl, Kathryn. Limited Edition. Hardcover. One of 500 copies, quarto size, 54 pp. Near fine / near fine. Item #19052012

This publication by the Eucalyptus Press, based in Mills College, is a series of letters written by Mary Atkins, founder of the Young Ladies Seminary in 1852, which would go on to become Mills College in Oakland, California, as she travels on the ship "Advance" in the Pacific Ocean.

The book is introduced by Aurelia Henry Reinhardt (1877-1948), an educator and activist who was president of Mills College from 1916 to 1943, the longest-serving president in the school's history (n. b., info from Wikipedia); Reinhardt praises Atkins' lifelong dedication to teaching and honours her as one of the few audible womens' voices of the American West and nineteenth-century education.
