The Book of Ruth

London: Joseph Cundall, 1850. Cadogan, Lady Augusta. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo size, 27 pp. Good +. Item #16063201

This publication of the Book of Ruth is illustrated by Lady Augusta Sarah Cadogan (1811-1882), who was the daughter of the third Earl of Cadogan, and Lady-in-Waiting to the Duchess of Cambridge, to whom she dedicates the illustrations in this book; the illustrations are lovely in their detail and colouring, in appearance as though they are chromolithographs with hand-colouring. Text is the King James Version, but the illustrations are what make this volume spectacular.

Stamps from Woodward's Gardens are featured on a few pages throughout the book; built after the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, California, the Gardens was an amusement park, museum, and zoo that at one point was home to the famous bear Monarch, a wild grizzly bear later immortalised on the Flag of California.

The book is scarce in the trade, with no copies online or in auction records as of this writing; this volume is possibly in a custom binding, as there is a binder's stamp from Bone & Son, a prominent trade binder in Victorian London, on the rear paste-down endpaper.

___DESCRIPTION: Full blue paper over bevelled boards, title in gilt on the front board, title page with decorative capital letters in black, eight full-page colour illustrations by Cadogan throughout; octavo size (9.75" by 7.5"), pagination: [1-7] 8-24 [25-27]. Binder's ticket on rear paste-down endpaper from Bone & Son, 76 Fleet Street, London. ___CONDITION: Volume is good plus, with a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is bright with clean and bright illustrations, and entirely free of prior owner markings; soiling to the boards, overall rubbing to the edges and joints, corners are rubbed, light foxing throughout (not obscuring any text), the gutter between pp. 16 and 7 cracked, but text block still strong, and a small closed tear to the bottom margin of the third illustration.
